10 Principles of Burning Man

Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey wrote the 10 Principles in 2004 as guidelines for the newly-formed Regional Network. They were crafted not as a dictate of how people should be and act, but as a reflection of the community’s ethos and culture as it had organically developed since the event’s inception.

Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.

Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.

Radical Self-reliance
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on their inner resources.

Radical Self-expression
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.

Communal Effort
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.

Civic Responsibility
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.

Leaving No Trace
Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.

Participation
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.

Immediacy
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.

Camp Dues

Our camp dues vary $300.00 and up based on a sliding scale. Camp dues are non-refundable.

Application Process

We’re excited you’re interested in joining Playfully Yours Village!

New applicants will be asked to meet/interview with the camp leads over a virtual meeting.  We’ll be happy to answer all of your questions.

Pending the interview, you’ll be accepted into camp added to our social groups, and we’ll coordinate the dates you’ll be joining us.

Our Culture

We’re a family-

We’re playful, heart-led and proud that our camp is made up of amazing individuals who vary in race, background, profession, sexuality and spiritual/religious beliefs.   Many of us hold or have retired from leadership positions within our professions.

What unites us is love, spirit and playfulness.

Kink Friendly-

Aside from being playful and heart-led, we are also sex-positive and kink-friendly.  We lead kink themed workshops and run a dungeon on the Playa.  Everyone is welcome, but we work actively to create a safe space to learn, explore, play and connect.

VALUES

We share a lot of values. If you share them too, you’ll fit right in!

No spectators-

Participation is key to being a part of our family. Burning Man is a temporary city, not a music festival. The best experiences come from participating in the civic life of that city, not from watching things other people are doing. We put on multiple events during the week and put a lot of emphasis on active participation in the city.

Everybody works-

Camping for a week in the harsh Black Rock Desert is tough. We try to make it easier by collaborating to build a beautiful camp (home) to reside at, offerings to others and providing communal gifts to the Burning Man community.

The magic of Burning Man is the collaboration. Not only will you be collaborating to build something really awesome that you can be proud of, but you will test your own limits, learn many new skills, and make incredible friends for life. Burning Man is a transformative experience and the people you go through it with make all the difference.

This all takes a ton of work, both in the months leading up to the event getting everything ready, and during the week of Burning Man itself.

To camp with us, you can expect to put in several days of work before you even get to the event, and several hours of shifts 2-4 days once we’re there.

Sliding scale for camp dues-

If we charged everyone equally for what it actually costs to run the camp, we would rapidly turn into a playground for the wealthy. That is not something we want to see. That’s why we operate on an income-based dues system. Camp contributions range from $300 – $1000 (and up) based on your salary/financial situation.

We also have a NOTAFLOF (No One Turned Away For Lack Of Funds) policy. If you are in a situation where attending Burning Man would create financial hardship, and you apply for Burning Man’s Ticket Aid program, your Playfully Yours Village camp dues will be adjusted by the leadership team.

No drama-

Burning Man can be challenging and push one against their own walls and limits. Some people, at some point, have experienced some major emotional moments. This can be a big experience, especially for new burners.  We are here to support you!  That said, behavior which creates unnecessary conflict or drama will detract from other peoples’ experience on playa and won’t be tolerated (theft, physical altercations, disruptive/abusive behaviors, harassment, “perving out”, etc).

Consent-

We value the transformative experience of sensual and consensual touch, play, and interaction. We believe that consent plays a vital part in our connectivity and community. Our vision is that all parties participate in a physical encounter from a place of enthusiasm and autonomy. Consent must be explicitly granted from an individual who is clearly in a state of mind to be able to grant it.

It’s a privilege, not a right to be a member of Playfully Yours Village.
